Mobile: I can’t believe how many people are ignoring this!

Mobile Geddon

So, it's been seven weeks since Google introduced "Mobile-geddon". If you are in business and rely on search marketing to bring in leads...and you haven't caught up with Mobilegeddon - you might want to read this. On April 21 this year Google made a change to the way in which it promotes websites to the top of organic search results.

Simply put, if your website is not "mobile friendly" then your site will be marked down below other sites that are....well for those done on mobile anyway. That can't be many, right? Wrong! Google's published figures show that better than 60% of ALL searches are now done on mobile. That's right, your desktop website is now defunct.

"Mobile Friendly?" I hear some of you ask, "what's that?". Well, if you own a smart phone (yes some people still have buttons on their phone) and look at your website on it - how easy is it to read what's shown? Is it all neatly lined up in one column with big, easy to read text? Or is it trying to display a site designed for a widescreen desktop PC....and then squeezing it down to fit on your phone? If it's easy to read....it's mobile friendly - that's it. That's all there is to it. As a marketing business, we run many campaigns each week to bring in leads.

About three months before Mobilegeddon (shortly after Google made their announcement), we ran a tool over our database to check the websites we had on file and to highlight those businesses that didn't have a mobile friendly site - and then campaigned to those companies that were going to be affected by Google's changes. We had a great response and started to get very busy implementing changes that were needed. That work is beginning to die down now - but we still have a load of names we are campaigning to that are simply not doing anything about it.

For some, it's a non issue. They have websites that don't really perform that well and they do not rely on search to bring in business. Their care factor is very low and they are concentrating on more traditional forms of marketing to bring in business. But others! Some of them are selling products that traditionally rank well or are highly competitive search items.....and they are excluding themselves from over 60% of their marketplace.

I think there is a misconception that making a website mobile friendly will cost a lot of money. That's just plain wrong - for a simple website, we can make it mobile friendly for under $1,000 - including the resubmission to Google to get them to review your site for inclusion in mobile search. So - if you need to address this issue - contact us today and we can start work almost immediately.
