What are AI citations, exactly?
In traditional search, a "citation" usually means a mention of your business name, address and phone number in an online directory. AI citations are different. They're the moments when an AI tool references your business, your website, or your content as a source in its response.
This might look like Perplexity linking to your blog post while answering a question about your industry. Or ChatGPT mentioning your business by name when someone asks for a local recommendation. Or Google AI Overviews pulling a snippet from your service page to answer a query.
Each platform handles AI citations differently, and understanding those differences is key to earning more of them.
How AI citations work across different platforms
Perplexity is the most citation-heavy AI search tool. It includes numbered source links for nearly every claim it makes. This makes it the most transparent — and the easiest platform to track your citations on. Getting cited by Perplexity often starts with having clear, well-structured content that directly answers specific questions.
ChatGPT handles citations differently depending on the mode. When using web browsing, it includes source links similar to Perplexity. In standard mode, it draws on its training data — meaning your business needs to have a strong enough digital footprint to be part of what the model learned during training.
Google AI Overviews pull from Google's existing index, so there's significant overlap with traditional SEO. But the selection criteria are different. Google AI tends to favour content that directly answers the query in a concise, authoritative way — not just content that ranks well organically.
Claude (made by Anthropic) is increasingly used for research and recommendations. Like ChatGPT, it draws on training data and, in some modes, web search. Businesses with clear, consistent information across multiple authoritative sources tend to perform best.
Why AI citations matter for your business
AI citations are the new word of mouth. When an AI tool recommends your business, it carries a level of implied endorsement that's incredibly powerful. The user asked a question, and the AI — which they trust — pointed to you.
Unlike traditional search results where users choose from a list, AI citations often come as direct recommendations. "Based on your needs, I'd suggest [your business]" is fundamentally different from being link number seven on page one of Google.
There's also a compounding effect. AI models learn from the web, and the more your business is cited and referenced, the more likely future versions of these models are to include you in their training data. Early AI citations create a flywheel.
"An AI citation isn't just a link. It's a recommendation from a tool your customer already trusts. That's a fundamentally different kind of visibility."
How to earn more AI citations
AI tools cite sources for the same reason a good journalist does — they need reliable, clear information to back up their claims. Here's how to become a source they reach for.
Create definitive content on your topics. AI tools prefer comprehensive, authoritative pages over thin content. If you're a plumber in Sydney, having a detailed page on "emergency plumbing services in Sydney" — with specific information about response times, service areas, and pricing ranges — is far more citable than a generic "our services" page.
Structure your content for extraction. Use clear headings, short paragraphs, and direct answers early in each section. AI tools need to be able to pull a clean, useful snippet from your content. If your key information is buried in the fourth paragraph, it's less likely to be cited.
Build third-party validation. AI tools don't just cite your website. They cross-reference what other sources say about you. Reviews, directory listings, industry mentions, and news coverage all strengthen your citation profile.
Keep information current. AI tools lose confidence in sources with outdated information. If your website still mentions services you stopped offering two years ago, or your opening hours are wrong, AI tools notice — and they'll cite a competitor whose information is up to date.
Use proper technical markup. Schema.org structured data helps AI tools understand your content at a technical level. It's like providing a machine-readable summary of everything on your page.
How to track your AI citations
This is the part most businesses struggle with. Unlike Google Search Console, there's no single dashboard that shows you all your AI citations across every platform.
Manual checking is a start — regularly asking AI tools the questions your customers would ask and noting whether you appear. But it's time-consuming and inconsistent.
That's why we built GrafBuilder — to give businesses a systematic way to track AI citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Claude. It monitors how often you're cited, in what context, and how your AI visibility changes over time.
AI citations are the new backlinks
In the early days of SEO, the businesses that understood backlinks built a lasting advantage. AI citations are following the same pattern. They're a new signal of authority and relevance, and the businesses that accumulate them now will be very hard to displace later.
The difference is that AI citations aren't something you can buy or manufacture. They're earned by being genuinely useful, clearly described, and consistently present across the web. Which, when you think about it, is how marketing should have worked all along.
