Why AI search optimisation matters right now
Traditional search gives you a page of links. AI search gives you an answer. That's a fundamental shift, and it changes everything about how businesses need to think about their online presence.
When someone asks Perplexity "best accountant in Melbourne for small business," the AI doesn't show ten options. It recommends one or two, with reasons. If you're not one of them, there's no second page to appear on. You're just not there.
The good news? Most businesses haven't started optimising for AI search yet. That means there's a window right now where smart action gets outsized results. Here's exactly what to do.
Step 1: Audit how AI currently sees your business
Before you change anything, find out where you stand. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews and ask them questions your customers would ask. Questions that should lead to your business.
Try variations: "best [your service] in [your city]," "who does [specific thing] near [your area]," and "[your industry] recommendations [your region]." Take screenshots. Note what comes up — and what doesn't.
If your business doesn't appear at all, don't panic. That's actually the most common result right now, and it means there's clear upside. If you want a more thorough analysis, our AI findability audit covers all the major platforms systematically.
Step 2: Make your website AI-readable
AI tools don't browse websites the way humans do. They parse text, extract meaning, and look for clear signals about what your business does. Vague marketing copy confuses them.
State the basics clearly. Your homepage should explicitly say what you do, where you do it, and who you do it for. Not buried in a paragraph — right up front.
Use structured data. Schema markup tells AI tools about your business in a language they understand natively. LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, and Organisation schema are the priorities for most businesses.
Create topic-specific pages. AI tools prefer citing pages that are deeply focused on a single topic rather than pages that try to cover everything. If you offer five services, have five detailed service pages rather than one overview page.
Step 3: Build your authority across the web
AI tools don't just read your website. They cross-reference information from directories, review sites, social profiles, industry publications, and news articles. The more consistent and widespread your digital footprint, the more confident AI becomes in recommending you.
Claim and complete every directory listing. Google Business Profile, Yelp, Yellow Pages, industry-specific directories — make sure they all say the same thing. Inconsistent information erodes AI confidence.
Get reviews and respond to them. AI tools factor in review sentiment. A business with 50 reviews averaging 4.7 stars is more likely to be recommended than one with 5 reviews, even if those 5 are all five stars.
Earn mentions in authoritative content. Guest posts, industry articles, podcast appearances, and local news coverage all create the kind of third-party validation AI tools rely on when making recommendations.
Step 4: Create content that AI wants to cite
AI tools need sources to back up their answers. Your content can be that source — but only if it's genuinely useful and clearly structured.
Answer specific questions. Think about what your customers ask before they become customers. Create content that answers those exact questions, with the answer in the first paragraph.
Include data and specifics. AI tools prefer concrete information over vague advice. "Website redesigns typically take 6-12 weeks for a 20-page site" is more citable than "websites take a while to build."
Write from experience. AI tools can distinguish between content that demonstrates genuine expertise and content that's been scraped together from other sources. Share what you've actually learned from doing the work.
"The businesses getting cited by AI aren't gaming a system. They're just being genuinely helpful in a way that machines can understand."
Step 5: Monitor and iterate
AI search optimisation isn't a one-time project. AI models are updated regularly, new platforms emerge, and the way AI selects sources evolves constantly. You need ongoing monitoring.
Track which AI platforms mention your business, how often, and in what context. Look for patterns in what gets cited and what gets ignored. Adjust your content and optimisation strategy based on real data, not guesswork.
This is exactly what we built our GrafBuilder platform to do — give businesses a clear, ongoing view of their AI visibility across all the major platforms.
The window is open — for now
AI search optimisation is where traditional SEO was fifteen years ago. Most businesses haven't heard of it. The ones that invest now will build a lead that's very hard for latecomers to close. The steps aren't complicated, but they do require intention and consistency.
